No Reply At All…

I just got a broadcast email from a marketer whose products I use. He was wishing me a Happy Easter!

I instinctively hit reply to the email and was about to wish him the same, when I realized my Outlook had addressed the email to: noreply@hisdomain.com.

Well, that stopped me dead in my tracks!

It occurred to me at that moment how many times over the years I had tried to reply to an email I received, and had the dreaded “noreply@whatever…” nomenclature appear in my “To” field.

Many times I was about to offer that person, what I considered to be, good feedback that would help their business.

But alas, my comments were headed for “the void.”

Do you have an autoresponder that you use? Do you send any emails with a “noreply” address to your customers or prospects?

If you do, you may not only be missing out on a lot of valuable information your customers want to tell you (that will actually help you to make more sales)…you may be turning them off as well.

I know, I know. You have 100,000′s or millions of customers, and you can’t very well reply to them all, right?

Well, let me ask you this: do you have a “catch all” email address?

You know, an info@… or feedback@… or support@… address. Whatever you choose to make it. Do you have one?

If not, you should.

That doesn’t mean you have to answer all the emails personally. For some niches I’m involved it, I do answer every email personally. For some others, it’s just not practical (I wouldn’t have time to do anything else, as I’m sure you know). In those cases, I have help.

But if anyone were to reply to any email that was ever sent by me or an autoresponder of mine, there will always be a live human being on the other end.

I know…some other marketers will tell you it eats up your time and capital and everything else–when you spend your resources on the “time vampires”, as Dan Kennedy calls them.

Rest assured, I have a process to deal with that as well.

I guess my point is, perhaps you have a “catch-all” email address set up. But then you go ahead and send out emails with a “noreply” return address.

Tsk. Tsk.

You should already know that it takes between 7 and a billion times the cost to acquire a new customer as it does to sell an existing one (ok, I’m having some fun here, but you get the point).

So why in the world wouldn’t you want to send your autoresponder replies to your catch-all address? Even if you don’t have one, one billionth the cost of acquiring a new customer seems to be worth it to me in setting one up ASAP.

Ok, I’m going overboard with the numbers, but I hope this makes you think a little.

In almost all cases, if you receive an email from me: all you have to do to reach me personally is to hit “reply” and tell me what’s on your mind.

And that goes for this blog too.

You hit the nail on the head! Nothing irritates me more than to do exactly what you did and then see the noreply@business.com. I feel like my business isn’t important enough to them to hear what I have to say. I have also received these when I have emailed a company with a problem and they responded via my inbox. Rather than me replying to the email I have to log back into the account, bring up the issue via the ticket number, and respond to that. I think that is so annoying. Why should I, the customer, have to go out of my way for THEIR company to fix an issue? Just Let me reply to the email they sent. In today’s world of technology I’m sure they can sort their incoming emails in an orderly fashion!

Thanks for letting me vent about that!

    Khristie,

I hear you! That’s why to this day, you can always hit reply and send me a personal email to me, not some no-reply address!

    Chers,

    John
