A Neat Little Twitter Trick

Yesterday I downloaded a couple chapters of Joel’s Comm’s Twitter Power book, and I noticed something interesting on that site.

Joel had a link you could click that would send you to Twitter with a tweet already filled in for you. He obviously did that so his visitors could tweet and spread the word about his book promotion, but up until then, I had never seen that strategy used before.

It’s something that’s certainly worth testing. Given Twitter’s non-pitch atmosphere, I’d recommend only trying it to encourage tweets about pure content or freebie giveaways, though.

What do you think? Feel free to test it out by tweeting about this blog post, which should definitely have mass Twitter appeal and does fit the pure content criteria.

(To see what I did, just right-click the link above, select “Copy Link Location” if using Firefox or “Copy Shortcut” if using Internet Explorer, then paste it in notepad or any text editor.

By the way, lots of useful information and resources in Joel’s book. You can see some of the changes I already made to my Twitter profile as a result (you can also connect with me on Twitter there).

    John,

Wanna make it even more powerful and viral? Add in “RT @john_ritz” (minus the quotes) to the beginning of that Tweet message, and all of those people will be visiting your Twitter profile directly and many more will follow you.

    Thanks, Roy. Glad to contribute!

Dennis, great tip! I just made the change. There’s another bonus to doing that: I’ll get to see those RT’s in the replies. Thank you!

    Excellent tip John,

I will definitely be using that!

Hmmm…when I right click the link there is no “Copy Link Location,” Do I have to use Firefox? Paul

  6. April 8th, 2009 at 21:44 | #6

    Thanks, Andy!

Paul, you’re right. For IE users, it would be “Copy Shortcut.” I’ll update the post to reflect that. Thanks for pointing that out.

An update: I found a nifty plugin for Wordpress called Tweetmeme (http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/tweetmeme/). It puts a reweet button at the top or bottom of your posts, using the same concept that I used with the link in my post.

It also keeps track of how many RTs and displays a counter. Something I’m going to test.

    Hi John,

Thanks for the helpful tip. Do you have a link to a site that lists the various punctuation conversions? For example you use an apostrophe and that’s %27. I’d like to use a period in mine, and I’m not even sure how I would search for this.

    Thank you,
    Dan

  9. April 14th, 2009 at 22:56 | #9

    Sure, Dan. I use http://www.asciitable.com

Comes in handy all the time. Here you want the 2-character field under the “Hx” column. Just prefix it with a % sign and you have the code.

So for a period, it would be %2E

    Cheers,

    John

Thanks John, that’s exactly what I was looking for.

One question, people still use Internet Explorer? Microsoft dosn’t even use it any more.

    Hi John,
    I followed a tweet here. ;)

I do not use the Wordpress blog platform but, I know some people have started switching over to http://twittley.com – Then when someone wants to retweet a story it also places it on the Twittley site, as a post gets more retweets it moves up in rank. Similar to a DIGG.

Like I said, I do not use WP but, I thought it may be of interest to you. I do have the Twittly on my toolbar so, I can submit good blog post even if they do not have a button.

Thanks, folks! I appreciate the great ideas you shared.

Brad, not sure about Microsoft, but my own stats show that quite a number of people still use IE. And Microsoft released IE 8 not too long ago, so I doubt they’re abandoning it anytime soon.

The cool thing about this trick is that it deosn’t require a Worpress blog. In fact any blog should work, and even a “standard” authority site model will work just fine.

That also goes for all the tips I shared in the video and article in my post “Get More Sales With The Twitter Funnel”, which you can find here:

It is very nice meeting you via Twitter. Thank you for sharing this Twitter information with us. I also am a big Wordpress fan and will be looking up the plugin Tweetmeme that you mentioned and the Twittley info is interesting as well.
